How To Clean And Brush Teeth With Braces Properly

Proper brushing is vital to keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Because not brushing properly can cause permanent damage to your teeth, this damage can be in the form permanent white spots, brown spots, cavities and/or gum disease.

If there is a patient who does not brush their teeth properly, when they have braces, when the braces were removed they may have permanent white and brown spots on their teeth. Other patients may fail to brush their teeth properly so their braces may have to be removed.

The teeth will be completely straight but to prevent these issues from happening one must develop a system.

It’s to clean all the surfaces, every time, start by brushing the outer surfaces and braces completely with a gentle circular motion. Tilt your toothbrush 45 degrees to clean the top and bottom of the braces. Concentrate on the area’s of your teeth between the gums and the braces, this is the area that is most commonly missed when brushing, and pay special attention to areas with hooks as plaque and food debris accumulate here.

Don’t forget to brush your tongue as odor causing bacteria can get trapped here, use a soft bristled toothbrush and gentle strokes when brushing. Plaque is soft and can easily be removed with proper brushing techniques, do not brush with a hard bristle toothbrush or use harsh motions, as this may cause damage to your teeth and gums.

To clean between the brackets you can use a proxy brush, you can usually get one from the orthodontist or at your local drugstore. The proxy brush is shaped like a miniature Christmas tree inserted under the archway and gently work it in up and down motion, by doing this you’ll be cleaning all the surfaces. When you wake up in the morning, before bed and after every meal you can rinse debris away after brushing to keep your teeth strong and healthy. Remember in order to have a nice smile you not only need have straight teeth, you need to have clean healthy-looking teeth. The last thing you want when your braces are removed is your teeth are straight but badly broken down or discolored.
